Job Description:

I am an Anchor and Multimedia Journalist for KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa, where I have been since July 2023. Before joining KTIV, I spent 7 years at KMEG 14 in Sioux City, starting as a digital content and news producer, before moving into an MMJ role in 2019, and then joining the evening anchor team as Anchor/MMJ in September 2021 where I remained until our station closure in May 2023.

The stories I share are typically features and investigations, working mainly as a multimedia journalist.

Number of Years Experience: 8

Organization: KTIV

NPPA Member: Yes

Personal Statement:

In May 2023, my newsroom, KMEG, where I had grown and truly learned how to be a journalist, was shuttered with no notice by our parent company. This situation gave me just a few weeks to try and find a new newsroom to call home, before I was no longer collecting a paycheck.

I landed at KTIV in the same city two months later, taking a demotion from evening anchor to weekend anchor, and also taking a very large pay cut in the process. Because of this, my financial situation is challenging and I barely have enough money for gas and food by the end of my two-week paycheck.

Growing up, I dreamed of being a journalist, sharing important stories that impacted the community and the nation. My goal is to work in a larger market as a feature or investigative reporter. With many major markets moving to MMJ roles, advancing my skills and my knowledge with a camera is critical. My skills are largely self-taught. While I have a degree in Mass Communication, my school’s program was radio and print focused and my skills behind a camera have come in the field over the last handful of years.

Having the opportunity to attend the NPPA workshop and learn from some of the best in this industry would be a huge step forward in me reaching my goals as a journalist. Without financial assistance, I will not be able to attend.

My passion is news. I live and breathe it. I want to learn how to better showcase stories visually as an MMJ, and utilize other tools to give my viewers, and my community, the best story. I don’t do this job for me, I do it for the community I live in. Since I started in this industry I’ve had the same motto, if the story I share can impact even one person who sees it, it’s a successful day. I love shooting my own video, and working on a story from conception to completion. Having the knowledge and chance to grow as a journalist will better help me achieve that dream.
