Marissa Sulek

2020 Advanced Storytelling Workshop

Award Winner

The National Press Photographers Foundation winner of The Advanced Storytelling Workshop Award is Marissa Sulek from WQAD News Channel 8 in Moline, Illinois. This award is $1,000 plus the waiver of the registration fee to attend the NPPA Advanced Storytelling Workshop at Texas State University in San Marcos. The winners of this award are professional video photojournalists who are NPPA members.

Sulek graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from the College of Media in 2018 with an advertising degree. Her senior year she realized she wanted to tell stories, so she made a reel, sent it off and is now an MMJ at WQAD in Moline, Illinois. It’s only a few hours from Park Ridge, her hometown and a suburb of Chicago.

“WQAD has been an amazing place to learn, try new things, and tell true stories,” states Sulek. In her almost two years at WQAD she continues to work on her reporting, being a one man band, and is a fill-in anchor.
