Shafkat Anowar

​Born in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, I am a Bangladeshi photographer currently based in Dallas, TX. My journey as an immigrant started in 2016 when I moved to Hawai’i for my higher education. Although I spent most of my teen life cutting and pasting cricket and football newspaper photos in a scrapbook, I had no plans to be around photography. My interest sparked when I came across some Presidential photos in a local newspaper in my hometown. However, moving to Hawai‘i was the biggest stepping stone of my career.

​One of my goals during my time in college was to show Hawaii in a different way, something that can’t be found in a Google search. That spirit led me to work on multiple Native Hawaiian issues and conflicts. I consider myself privileged to be able to begin my career in a place that many consider as the paradise on earth.

My work has been recognized by Eddie Adams Workshop XXXIII, College Photographer of the Year, College Media Association, Associated College Press, Society of Professional Journalists, Boyd’s Station, America Reimagined, and the University of Hawai‘i.

I am currently a visual journalist for The Dallas Morning News.
