The Morris Berman Lecture Series is a program created by the National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF) to bring outstanding visual journalists and photojournalists into journalism schools and university programs to share their expertise with students. It was established to accomplish a dream of Morris Berman, a former National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) president and long-time member.
Purpose and activities
- Berman proposed and funded the lecture series while serving on the NPPF board of trustees, with the goal of having experienced professionals share knowledge and hands-on skills with the next generation of journalists.
- The series brings talented visual storytellers to colleges and universities across the U.S. to speak directly with students.
- As part of the program, students produce a storytelling video of the lecture and related events, which is then posted on the NPPF website to extend the learning to a wider audience via digital and Internet platforms.
History
Morris Berman was deeply involved in the NPPA—as one of its founders and a past president—and he continued attending NPPA conventions until his death in 2002. His lecture series was created to continue his commitment to education and mentorship in photojournalism.
