Democracy cannot be achieved without a free and independent press. Independent news organizations hold government officials accountable. The National Press Photographers Association provides numerous educational opportunities for professional development in photojournalism. It is vital that college students who aspire to be photojournalists be members of NPPA.

The cost of a college degree is very expensive and many students incur large debt loads in order to complete their degrees. Memberships in professional organizations, while fundamental in developing a measure of professionalism and ethics outside of the classroom are sometimes not affordable.

This membership comes with a subscription to News Photographer Magazine, the premiere publication showing students professional standards in visual journalism and discussion of important issues in photojournalism.
