At Newhouse, he teaches multimedia storytelling, video journalism, digital design, and sports photography courses. Additionally, he serves as the web developer and visual storytelling advisor for the award-winning publication TheNewsHouse.com.
Gitner has taken on various leadership roles within the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), including national secretary, national event committee chair, and technology committee chair. He was co-director of the Multimedia Immersion program for 14 years and was the project manager for a previous version of the NPPA website. He also led the development of the current NPPA Clip Contest website, dedicating significant time to helping the organization think digitally and adapt to evolving technology. His volunteer service to NPPA has been recognized with the Joseph Costa Award, President’s Award, NPPA Special Citation, and the Robert F. Garland Educator Award. He is also an NPPA Life Member and continues to support the association as the web developer for the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism contest.
Gitner is working on the third edition of his textbook, Multimedia Storytelling for Digital Communicators in a Multiplatform World. The textbook is widely used in communication programs, including at Newhouse.
The National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing photojournalism through education, scholarships, and fellowships for both emerging and established visual journalists. Gitner’s multimedia storytelling and journalism education expertise will strengthen NPPF’s mission to support the next generation of visual journalists.
