Job Description:
I’m currently a News Photojournalist at KOMO TV in Seattle, WA. I started in September 2022, working my first 10 months on the Morning Shift starting at 3am. Most of what I shot was Breaking News and Live Shots. Summer of 2023 is when I was moved to the day shift (occasionally I fill in on nights) where I have been able to grow a lot more and shoot more than Breaking News. I’ve quickly become a go-to photog for sports and special assignments.
Numbers of Years Experience: 1.5
NPPA Member: Yes
Personal Statement:
My background is in narrative filmmaking. That is my ultimate goal, and I still hope to achieve that one day. There are plenty of things I learned in film school that I’ve applied to my news work, and there are also things I’ve learned in news that I’ve been able to apply in my film work since. My goal at the beginning of each day is to try and find a way to make my news stories look less like news. Everyday is different, and I believe every story should have its own visual identity, but my goal is to be as creative as I can with what I’m given.
Financially I need this or the Hutchison/Wheeler Storytelling Award (which I applied for) as I’m the sole provider for myself and my mother whom I live with. She was in a car accident a few years ago and cannot work anymore, so I pay for most of the bills. One of these awards would help me be able to attend the workshop and better myself as a photojournalist.
