I am one of the main anchors on The Breakfast Show at KFVS12 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I currently co-anchor from 5:30am-7:00am.
During the 7am hour, I solo anchor The Breakfast Show Too. In this show, I preform live interviews with guest, I create user generated content to help involve the audience and I create stories for my Heartland Hometown segments.
On top of being an anchor, I am still a reporter/MMJ. I like to do two packages a month. I tend to lean more toward the heartwarming and emotional stories, but I’m not opposed to hard news packages!
As a journalist, I am always looking to grow my craft, whether that be my on-air presence or as a reporter turning stories. A few goals that I have include improving my videography skills, editing skills and writing skills. I would like to learn how to better use my camera to present my story in a more creative way. That would include shooting my b-roll and interviews in different way. I really enjoy the editing process. I feel like that’s a time that I can get creative with natural sound, nat pops, transitions and so on. I would like to learn more techniques that can help me grow while in post. What I know about editing feels very small compared to all the knowledge out there. Lastly, I want to learn the best writing techniques from Boyd Huppert. That has been a goal of mine ever since I was in college. I have studied his stories and listen to some of his videos with his tips, but learning in person would offer tremendous help to my writing process.
For the last couple of years I have wanted to take part in this workshop, but I never had the money to make it happen. I live in Missouri so I would need to catch a plane, get a hotel room for the week and pay for the conference all on my own dime. That is not possible for me to do as I am already putting any extra money toward bills and daily life. I know that if I were able to go to this conference I would be able to perfect my craft and grow as a journalist. I look up to many veteran journalists, in hopes of telling stories to their ability. I know that going to a conference of this size could help me get to where I want to be.
If I could afford to pay for this conference myself, I would have already participated in years past.
