School District of Manatee County (MSTV)
I had a dream during my high school years of being a journalist that helped people, told people’s stories, and helped to uncovered and unseat corruption in the world. After college and a handful of years working as a video editor and photojournalist in the broadcast news industry, I realized that the news industry was focused more on clicks and advertising dollars than its intended goal of being a voice for the public. Shortly after coming to this realization I left the private sector to pursue a more fulfilling career.
By utilizing my original goals as motivation, I eventually found my way to the School District of Manatee County where I currently work as a Video Production Specialist, a hybrid-job that is part journalism and part public relations.
My job consists of cover events and happenings around the district and telling positive, heartfelt stories that highlight employees and students within the district. I broadcast things my district is doing to further the education of it’s students in all aspects of their lives. I’ve taken my original purpose in life and modified it in such a way that I now wish to help the students of Manatee County get the best education possible. I do this by showing the world what amazing things the district is doing for its students and staff so that it may inspire others to follow the example set fourth and get involved in the education and betterment of our youth.
I ultimately want to become a catalyst for others to make a positive change in student’s lives.
The main reason I desire this scholarship is because I am a public sector employee. As such I have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers and must always keep them in mind when making choices as their tax dollars fund my paycheck and our district’s budgets. It would be wrong and hypocritical of me to waste their money when I ultimately became a journalist to uncover and unseat corruption in the world that more often than not wastes and embezzles tax payer money.
By attaining this scholarship I will lessen the drain on taxpayer money which could be put towards other ventures within my particular department.
I hope to become a better photojournalist at this workshop so that I may better tell the district’s stories. My ability to capture an audience and tell a unique and compelling story is still one of my basic job functions. Being able to do this better will not only make me a better journalist and storyteller, but also help me achieve my goal of becoming that catalyst for change.
