My camera is my right-hand man. Occasionally I team up with a photojournalist, but I do my best work as an MMJ. It challenges me to be more creative with my storytelling, which is primarily comprised of day-turn pieces. I’ve just finished my first year as a multimedia journalist at NBC5 in the Burlington/Plattsburgh market. I’m expected to turn a package, often accompanied by a VOSOT or two. That encompasses the entire production process, from pitching stories, filming, writing and editing.

My passion for storytelling drove me to a career in television news. I challenge myself to think outside the box with camera angles, standups and story structure. Throughout my college career and internships, I’ve closely watched, and learned, from the NPPA heavyweights, but sitting on the sidelines isn’t enough anymore. I want to get my hands dirty, but it’s no secret that entry-level positions in this business aren’t the most lucrative. Between costly student loans and rent, my tight budget simply won’t allow for extra spending to attend the workshop. That’s why I’m applying for consideration for the Gordon Yoder Award.
