I usually get one shot to make something compelling. My goal is to stop a person from scrolling through their phone, get lost in a story, and remember something about it. You can’t expect more out of your audience these days. There’s a lot of competition out there. If I can genuinely hold their attention, I’ve done my job.
With the blessing of my news department, I’m focusing on stories about wildlife, our local environment and our heritage. There are a lot of untold stories in our border region. We expect rapid changes and development here. I think it’s my responsibility to inform people about what makes their home unique. We also want to keep the edge in our stories. Accountability has been our brand. That means my stories should be compelling and journalistically robust.
I’m the only reporter in my news department who shoots on their own. I have a lot of enthusiasm for developing as a shooter. I spend a lot of time learning new techniques and technology. The next step is to learn in the NPPA setting.
I am not able to afford the Shoot & Edit fee for this year’s News Video Workshop. I would not be able to attend without support. I’m requesting the Gordon Yoder News Video Scholarship so I can offset my expenses of the enrollment, lodging and travel.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
